My personal speech coaching and writing has developed and my scope of work has broadened. I have begun to work with clients who want help with corporate and political presentations and speeches.
I do not have the ‘focused’ experience like the established operators in the field of corporate communications – the heavyweights. Nor do I have their overheads, set scripts or rigid programmes. I bring a fresh perspective and a broader and better range of experience to this sort of work. I am a very individual, very one-man band.
Discretion and integrity are paramount. All clients remain anonymous.
My approach:
I spend as much time listening as talking. I do not follow a set script. I follow the client first so I can then become an effective guide.
I encourage the use of language that every listener can understand. I avoid jargon and technical terms except in specific settings.
I believe it is the speaker who changes people’s minds, not what they say.
Specific, Relevant – and Unique – Experience
I know what it means to run a company: including team building, recruitment, career planning, marketing, sales, distribution, government relations and regulations and much else besides. With an investment of USD20,000 and no support, over seven years I built a company that turned over USD four million per annum in sales.
I am a wordsmith, an experienced writer, editor and translator. I have spent seven years as a publisher and many more as an editor and journalist. The business mentioned above was a series of magazines and guides. Besides journalism, editing and ghost writing, I am working on my fourth book.
I have a deep knowledge and understanding of China and doing business there. I lived and worked in the country for 18 years and speak and read and write Mandarin Chinese. I am no longer surprised at how many businesses and clients have connections and commercial interests in China.
I am a busy working actor, well-versed in the techniques borrowed from drama that make an effective communicator. The majority of communications coaches are former actors. I used to deliver coaching with one. I mostly do theatre work, in the evenings, hence my days are free. I have time to spare and enthusiasm to help.
Political nous. Building a business in a country where all commercial activity, especially media, is tightly controlled yet loosely regulated by government agencies, gave me an unmatched lesson in politics, specifically the politics of pleasing as many people as possible when each and every one of them has an objective that is in direct conflict with all the others’. The key word is ‘appeal’. I can help you appeal to your audience.
